Redfish with Capt. Bill Cannan

Starting
in September and running into the Fall, the redfish run makes for some excellent
fishing. Around the passes and
along the beachfront redfish up to thirty pounds are common and over thirty are
not unheard of. Light tackle can be
pushed to the max on fish that might run out 200 feet of line or more.
I take
Bull Redfish parties to the passes and the beachfront and either drift or anchor
using shad and crab for bait. I
promote catch and release with the oversized reds. A photograph goes a long way and if you would like a mount I’ll get the
length and girth for a popular replica mount. If you have a redfish tag on your license and want to box one with your
tag that is fine too.

In the bay
we get into schools of redfish that are in the 20-28 inch slot and up to 34
inches regularly in the Fall. We
catch these fish on soft plastics like Bass Assassins and shrimptails.
We can
wade, work birds, or drift fish for the reds depending on the bite.
